1. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM): The Robot's Sense of Self and Surroundings

SLAM is the computational problem of constructing or updating a map of an unknown environment while simultaneously keeping track of the robot's location within that map. It's often referred to as the "chicken-and-egg problem" because you need a map to localize, and you need to localize to build a map. SLAM algorithms ingeniously solve this by continuously refining both simultaneously.

Why is SLAM Essential?

2. Path Planning: How to Get There Efficiently and Safely

Once a robot knows where it is and has a map of its environment (thanks to SLAM or a pre-built map), path planning is the process of computing a collision-free and optimal path from a start location to a desired goal location.

Types of Path Planning:

1. Global Path Planning (Offline/Static):

   • Concept: Computes an entire path from start to goal before the robot starts moving, assuming a static and fully known environment.

   • Advantages: Can find truly optimal paths (e.g., shortest, least energy).

   • Disadvantages: Not adaptable to dynamic changes or unknown obstacles.

     • Dijkstra's Algorithm: Finds the shortest path in a graph from a single source to all other nodes.

     • Bug Algorithms: Simple, reactive algorithms that "follow" obstacles until a clear path to the goal is found.

• Delivery Robots: Use global planning to determine the optimal route across a campus, and local planning to navigate sidewalks, avoid people, and cross roads safely.

• Robots in Hazardous Environments: Plan a path to a dangerous area, ensuring it avoids known hazards. If an unexpected collapse occurs, local planning allows it to find an alternative route.

• Automated Parking Systems: Calculate the optimal trajectory for a vehicle to maneuver into a tight parking spot, accounting for the vehicle's turning radius and surrounding obstacles.

• Search Coverage Robots: Plan paths that efficiently cover an entire area (e.g., for cleaning, inspection, or mapping), minimizing redundant movement.

The Interplay: Navigation Stack

In practice, mobile robot navigation systems often combine SLAM and path planning within a layered architecture, frequently managed by frameworks like ROS (Robot Operating System). A common structure, often referred to as a "Navigation Stack," involves:

1. Sensors: Provide raw data (LiDAR scans, camera feeds, odometry).

2. Localization Module (e.g., AMCL - Adaptive Monte Carlo Localization): Uses the map (often built by SLAM) and real-time sensor data to estimate the robot's precise pose.

3. Mapping Module (e.g., GMapping, Cartographer): Performs SLAM to build or update the occupancy grid map.

4. Global Planner: Takes the robot's current pose, the goal pose, and the global map to compute a long-term, high-level path.
